Thirteen TWC wrestlers headed north to compete at the Reno Worlds wrestling tournament last weekend. Three placed in the top six in their weight and division.
Over 2800 wrestlers registered for the World of Wrestling tournament held at the Livestock Center in Reno, Nevada. Wrestlers arrived on Thursday afternoon for weigh-ins. Opening ceremonies began Friday morning. Indoor fireworks blasted off as the competitors ran into the arena by state. Wrestlers from forty-six of the fifty-two states were represented at the competition. California wrestlers were by far the largest group with 1200 of the 2800 being from the Golden State. Wrestling started shortly after the opening ceremony and continued through Sunday evening.
Janida Garcia (123lb) took fourth place in the 15 year-old girls division with 23 female wrestlers in her bracket. After a bye in her first round, Janida went on to wrestle 7 matches. After a loss in her first match, Janida went on to win five consecutive matches. Two were won by pin and the others by decision. Janida finished her final match for third place with a 4-0 loss against Riley Aamold from Southwest Washington Wrestling Club.
Leonidas Agtarap (46lb) took fourth place in the 8 year-old boys division with 13 male wrestlers in his bracket. Leonidas won his first match against Kaynon Navarro from Bulldog Wrestling and lost his second match against Ryan Fuenffinger of Scoring Edge. Leonidas came back with vengeance winning three consecutive matches by decision while not giving up a single point in any of those matches. Leonidas found himself faced off with Fuenffinger once again for third place. Leonidas lost the match in a 4-2 decision.
Adrian Ramirez (46lb) took fifth place in the 8 year-old boys division. Adrian won his first match against Kao Grijalva of HotShots Wrestling in a 4-2 decision. Although he lost his next two matches, Adrian maintained his focus and came back to win his final match against Kaynon Navarro of Bulldog Wrestling in a 6-4 decision.
Congratulations to Janida, Leonidas, and Adrian! For all our wrestlers, regardless of the wins or losses, we are proud of you for the effort you put in.
